Apr 12 - 18: Through Black Spuce, Hotel Mumbai, Aquaman, Spartacus, Carmine Street Guitars & Dames!

This week two new thrillers premiere at the Playhouse. Canadian feature, Through Black Spruce, is directed by Don McKellar and is based on the Giller Prize-winning novel of the same name. Hotel Mumbai stars Dev Patel and Armie Hammer and is based on the Mumbai terror attacks of 2008. Both films will have you on the edge of your seats! In the documentary vein, we feature Carmine Street Guitars, a film about the iconic guitar-maker and Nothing Like a Dame, a film about four acting icons. For families this weekend we have Aquaman and also, Kubrick's biblical epic (yes, he made one!), Spartacus. "I am Spartacus!" Don't miss it! (ps/ If you want to be extra-patriotic and support NEW Canadian cinema, then see Through Black Spruce on National Canadian Film Day on Wed. Apr 17. If you can't make it then, do check it out during its run at the Playhouse....eh!)

“Director Ron Mann finds a rewarding tangent on rock 'n' roll iconography at Carmine Street Guitars, a Manhattan music shop whose proprietor builds custom instruments out of wood salvaged from demolished Gotham buildings. The doc's a delight for six-string gearheads and a reverie for those who still treasure what remains of pre-Bloomberg, pre-Giuliani New York.

"Ash Is Purest White is a masterwork, a true epic tale of love, loss, change and power in a shifting China as well as heartbreaking, realistic personal story." - NPR

She fires a shot into the air and then points the weapon at street punks who are attacking her boyfriend and his driver.
