35mm film is back this week at the Playhouse with three screenings of The Mission. Part of our Ennio Morricone film score series, we're thrilled to have the RARE opportunity to screen this epic film for you in 35mm!

"Ennio Morricone’s 1986 score for The Mission is, undoubtedly, one of those scores which ticks every box, a masterpiece on every conceivable level." - Movie Music UK.

If you've been meaning to catch one of our 35mm film screenings and haven't yet, this is a great place to start! There is a depth to 35mm presentations that cannot be replicated anywhere else. Through persistence of vision, 35mm screenings replicate the dream-state because of the shutter mechanism of the projector (which creates the illusion of movement). When watching a film in 35mm, the screen is black half the time, creating an alpha (dream) state. It's an ineffable and richer cinematic experience. That's why directors like Tarantino and Nolan are absolutely committed to 35mm. We are, too!

When composing the soundtrack for 'The Mission', Ennio Morricone wrote the famous tune 'Gabriel's Oboe' by watching Jeremy Irons' random finger placements in the scene where he first plays his oboe for the indigenous peoples.

I'm Your Man was a hit at TIFF this year, and now it has arrived at the Playhouse starting on Friday! In need of a love story? This is it. It's also sci-fi-ish and has a big heart. Perfect for date night, or if you loved the 'happier' episodes of "Black Mirror". Germany's Official Selection for Best Foreign Language Film for the 94th Academy Awards. Fans of Downton Abbey will delight in watching Dan Stevens' ('Matthew Crawley') uncanny and very funny portrayal as an android.

"'I'm Your Man' is science-fiction with soul and a romance written for adults. Just like its mechanical hero, this tender film is attractive, smart and cunningly designed to win your heart." - Empire
