"Through his groundbreaking roles and singular talent, Sidney Poitier epitomized dignity and grace, revealing the power of movies to bring us closer together." - Barack Obama
Trailblazing actor Sidney Poitier passed away on January 6, 2022, at the age of 94. Poitier broke down barriers for actors of colour, becoming the first black man to win the Best Actor Oscar, in addition to being a Hollywood leading man at a time before Black Americans were even granted full civil rights. He also opened doors for black directors, having directed nine feature films.
Starting on Feb 20th, which would have been his 95th birthday, we honour Sidney Poitier's career with a select retrospective of some of his most important films.
This is a very rare chance to experience the impact of seeing these classic, important films on the big screen. We invite you to join us in this tribute to a great man, and to see these films the way they were intended to be seen: collectively, on the big screen of your local cinema.
