After the stunning success of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on 35mm at the Playhouse, we are beyond excited to bring to you the next film screening on our newly restored 35mm projectors: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Three screenings only for Ang Lee's hugely influential, 2000 martial arts masterpiece. Don't miss the rare chance of seeing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 35mm on our big screen!
"By tapping into responses so primal they feel like magic, Lee's movie reminds you that the medium is never more powerful than when it makes myth feel fresh and new." - Geoff Pevere, Toronto Star
Music fans! We have Oasis Knebworth 1996 coming your way on the 23rd for a one-night-only screening at the Playhouse.
This is a must-see for any Brit-Rock fan or for anyone who was around in the 90's ;) Nearly 150,000 fans were in attendance each night at these two shows. Amazing.
Featuring a setlist packed from beginning to end with stone cold classics -- including Champagne Supernova, Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back In Anger -- the Knebworth concerts were both the pinnacle of the band’s success and the landmark gathering for a generation.
Last month we had "Oscar-winner Nic Cage" show his skills of in Pig. This month? We have wild & crazy Nic Cage in the brand new horror film, Prisoners of the Ghostland.
"Is 'Prisoners of the Ghostland.' as he claimed, truly the wildest movie Nicolas Cage has ever made? If not, it's certainly in the running." - The Thrillist
This week we wrap up our homage to filmmaker, Jim Jarmusch, with Night on Earth (1992) & Down By Law (1986).
These are films you just won't find anywhere else on the big screen. Come see (or remind yourself) why Jim Jarmusch is a giant of American independent cinema and why he's the "Hipster Indie King of Cool."
Brand new this week is Best Sellers, with Michael Caine & Aubrey Plaza in this comedy/drama about a reclusive, cantankerous novelist who embarks on a publicity tour with his desperate publisher. Perfect for a weekend watch!
"Splendid vehicles for the enormous talent of Sir Michael Caine, now in his 89th year."
Also playing this week at the Playhouse...
The Hidden Life of Trees, last week's hit-film at the Playhouse gets held over for just a few more screenings. This is a nature documentary that is made for everyone. If you didn't get a chance to see it last week, scroll down now and get tickets!
Starting on the 24th, we begin our celebration of the marvelous work of Italian composer, Ennio Morricone, who died in 2020. Morricone brought to cinema some of the most beautiful compositions ever made for film. His music brought an extra depth and dimension to the films for which he composed; he truly was (arguably?) the best. We invite you to be transported watching these films the way they were intended: on the biggest screen with the biggest sound. Tickets are on sale now for Once Upon a Time in the West, along with The Mission in 35mm. Even more screenings to come.
COVID:19 Safety Update: On Wed. Sept 1, 2021, the Ontario government announced that proof of vaccination in select settings would be required of all Ontario residents. Beginning Sept. 22, 2021, all cinemas in Ontario will require patrons to provide proof of vaccination for COVID-19. Please go to the link for further details, as set out by the province of Ontario. We thank you in advance so much for your support through this year that has been devastating to the film industry, and particularly, independent cinemas.
