2020 has been a wonderful year at the cinema for new independent films and this week we've got a special new release with The Artist's Wife. Legendary actors Lena Olin & Bruce Dern give stunning performances as an older couple grappling with the loss of time. It's a film that will build your perspective on getting older, family love and preserving what we have. A must-see.

This Friday we have a one-night-only screening of the iconic rock film, Pink Floyd: The Wall. Ok. Just a little pin-prick. There'll be no more... Ahhh! (You know the rest... It's stunning to experience on the big screen.) Classic comedy with the Marx Brothers Duck Soup next Thursday. Seldom seen in cinemas, it will bring the same laughs it did 87 years ago (maybe it even played at the Playhouse)! "Blessed with some of the Marx brothers' most brilliant work, Duck Soup is one of its -- or any -- era's finest comedies." - The Guardian

You can almost hear The Jesus and Mary Chain strum off the final shot of Lost in Translation, which screens on Saturday & Sunday with us... a film that was the entry to indie film for many of those born in the 80s. 2003 seems like forever ago when the film was released, but this is a timeless story that needs to be revisited on the big screen. Get tickets.

Two of our most-popular films since reopening are held over for even more screenings this week. If you didn't get a chance to check out The Nest, make sure you do this week as it's one of the best films of the year... "The Nest is...one of the most haunting and impressive works of the year" - Third Coast. Plus, we've added even more screenings of the hit-film, The Personal History of David Copperfield, a film with something for everyone and not to be missed on the big screen.

"The film is explosively wild, raw, primitive, sometimes inarticulate. It is also totally theatrical and compelling. It's film as primal scream; seething with anger, alienation and despair." - Boston Globe

"The 1982 film version of the rock opera Pink Floyd: The Wall is without question the best of all serious fiction films devoted to rock. Alan Parker, a director who seemed to deliberately choose widely varied projects, here collaborates with Gerald Scarfe, a biting British political caricaturist, to make what is essentially an experimental indie.

"Effectively balancing humor and subtle pathos, Sofia Coppola crafts a moving, melancholy story that serves as a showcase for both Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson" - Rotten Tomatoes

"Sofia Coppola's sophomore film (following the gently assured The Virgin Suicides) is another exploration of delicate relationships and uncommunicated frustrations, this one in a beautifully composed atmosphere of isolation." - Seanax.com

Fueled by inspired silliness and blessed with some of the Marx brothers' most brilliant work, Duck Soup is one of its -- or any -- era's finest comedies.

Arguably the Marx Brothers' funniest film, this comedy masterpiece contains several famous scenes, including the hilarious mirror sequence. A wealthy widow offers financial aid to the bankrupt country of Freedonia on condition that Rufus T. Firefly be made leader. But his chaotic, inept regime bumbles into war with neighboring Sylvania.

"If you've read the novel, it's a glorious adaptation. If you haven't, it's still the first perfect comedy of 2020." - The Herald

"You don’t need to have read Charles Dickens' eighth novel to enjoy this fresh, contemporary, provocative and brilliantly comic adaptation, which is a marvellously nimble and accessible take on his weighty and most autobiographical book.

Director Charles Wilkinson's evocative documentary beautifully explores how the artist Robert Davidson brought Haida culture back to its people.

In the 50 years since he carved his first totem pole and saw it raised on Haida Gwaii, Robert Davidson has come to be regarded as one of the world’s foremost modern artists. And yet, in the insightful interviews captured here, he retains a remarkably soft-spoken manner and a charming humility that belies what an influential figure he’s become in both the realms of art and activism.

In 1968 the Beatles travel to Rishikesh, India, to study transcendental meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

"There's some fan value here, all spiritual quests aside, in seeing how accepting the individual Beatles could be of someone they could have taken as an interloper in their lofty midst." - Variety
