Aspiring singer Kate (Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones) is kind of a screwup these days. Listless and self-destructive, she spends a lot of time catching grief from her parents and her boss at her job as a Christmas shop elf. A chance encounter with goofy hunk Tom (Henry Golding, Crazy Rich Asians) initially gets her defenses up, but his persistent and genuine interest leads her to try to turn her luck around in time for the holidays.
Directed by Paul Feig of Bridesmaids fame and written by Oscar winner Emma Thompson (Late Night), Last Christmas is a festive rom-com with depth. Set in the charming London winter, Kate and Tom get kicked out of skating rinks, volunteer at homeless shelters, and try to figure out what exactly it is they’ve been put on Earth to do. Loosely based on the nostalgic and bittersweet anthems of George Michael, this is a funny and deeply-felt future Christmas classic.
